More Odds and Ends!

Alphonse has turned a new leaf since the episode with the truck. He has become interested in the election. Probably because of the Republican Vice Presidential nominee.

Al has taken to reading "Human Events", a conservative newspaper. He is becoming a conservative. When not reading, he watches TV for election news. He isn't too happy with the reporting. You will notice , he is using my chair! (only when I'm not needing it.)

Another Day

Al came in very excited about something building mud things in the side yard. I knew he had found the "crawdad Mounds" (crayfish mounds), because I have to knock them down when I mow. They are very hard on lawn mower blades.

I was right, as he went down in the yard and was examining one of the mounds. These are some of the tallest mounds I have ever seen. I explained to Al that crawdads made them . They make mud balls in their nest and bring them up to the surface. They apparently do this to create more room in their nest, which is frequently dug out in a mud bank or anywhere below the ground water level. In our yard they live in the mud of an underground spring.

The mounds are taller than Al's head when he is standing on all four feet. He is showing off here.

GOT ONE! Al managed to push one over so he could "capture" it. He just couldn't resist.

Now he is telling me about the crawdad mounds. He is pointing out the hole in the center where the crawdad comes up from the ground into the mound.

Al tried to push over another mound, but it was too strong for him. I think it had a wider base. The crawdads build these mounds at night. They also feed mostly at night.

Of course Al didn't know what a "crawdad" was. I had to explain that crawdad was a slang term for "crayfish". A crayfish lives in fresh water, but is related to the salt water lobster. They are very similar in appearance. He didn't know what a lobster was, so I told him to look up "lobster" in the dictionary or the internet. There would be more pictures on the internet.

A few days ago, Al found my picture of McCain & Palin I received in the mail. I knew he had a big crush on Palin - I came in to find him praying that McCain & Palin will come to Arkansas before election. Of course, that means he would expect me to take him to Little Rock. We will see, but I don't think they have any plans to stop in Arkansas.

Phonse finally figured out that no one ever sat in the glider/rocker, so he has claimed it for "his chair". He now spends much of the day in his chair.

After a good meal he tends to doze for a while. Frequently quite a while. He sure looks happy.

Then there is sleeping. He does a real good job of sleeping.

When I returned home from my morning coffee at the local Hardee's liars club, I found Al all covered up with Betty's Washington Redskins blanket. I think Al is trying to tell me I keep the house too cold. I admit it is cool sometimes, and I wear a light jacket at those times. The economy being what it is, the house will remain cool. He'll probably go on strike next!
